Corrected Na = Measured Na + [1.6 × (Glucose - 100) / 100]Clinical Pearls
Essential in the management of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS). As glucose is corrected with insulin and fluids, the measured sodium will rise to approach the corrected sodium value.
Limitations
Some literature (Hillier et al.) suggests a correction factor of 2.4 rather than 1.6 when glucose is > 400 mg/dL, though 1.6 remains the standard in most guidelines.
