Creatinine Clearance (Cockcroft-Gault)

Estimates renal function for drug dosing using the Cockcroft-Gault equation.

Parameters

years
mg/dL

Creatinine Clearance (Cockcroft-Gault) Result

--
FormulaMale: CrCl = [(140 - age) × weight in kg] / (72 × SCr in mg/dL) Female: CrCl = [(140 - age) × weight in kg] / (72 × SCr in mg/dL) × 0.85

Clinical Pearls

Most FDA-approved drug labels use the Cockcroft-Gault formula to provide renal dosing recommendations. Although eGFR is better for staging CKD, CrCl remains the standard for drug dosing.

Limitations

Cockcroft-Gault overestimates GFR in obese patients if actual body weight is used, and in patients with very low muscle mass. Ideal Body Weight or Adjusted Body Weight is often preferred for obese patients in clinical practice.
