MELD Score Calculator

Calculates the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score to assess severity of chronic liver disease.

FormulaMELD = 3.78 × ln(bilirubin mg/dL) + 11.2 × ln(INR) + 9.57 × ln(creatinine mg/dL) + 6.43

Clinical Pearls

The MELD score objectively stratifies mortality risk in patients with advanced liver disease and is the primary tool used by transplant centers to prioritize liver allocation in the United States.

Normal Values / Reference

Normal MELD score is ≤6. Scores ≥15 typically indicate need for transplant evaluation. Scores ≥20 often meet criteria for listing.

Limitations

Does not account for hepatocellular carcinoma, acute liver failure, or certain complications like ascites or encephalopathy. May underestimate risk in patients with low creatinine due to muscle wasting.
