A MAP > 65 mmHg is typically considered the minimum necessary to adequately perfuse vital organs (brain, coronary arteries, kidneys). In states of shock or sepsis, maintaining a MAP ≥ 65 mmHg is a common resuscitation target.
Normal Values / Reference
Normal MAP ranges between 70 to 100 mmHg.
Limitations
The formula (SBP + 2DBP)/3 is an estimate. At very high heart rates, diastole shortens more than systole, and true MAP is closer to the arithmetic mean of SBP and DBP. The most accurate way to measure MAP is via an invasive arterial line.
