Pulmonology

Wells' Criteria for Pulmonary Embolism

Calculates the pre-test probability of Pulmonary Embolism (PE).

Parameters

Wells' Criteria for Pulmonary Embolism Result

--
FormulaSum of points: DVT symptoms (3), Alternative unlikely (3), HR>100 (1.5), Immobility/Surgery (1.5), Prior DVT/PE (1.5), Hemoptysis (1), Cancer (1)

Clinical Pearls

By risk-stratifying patients, the Wells Criteria combined with D-dimer testing safely reduces the need for expensive imaging and avoids unnecessary radiation exposure.

Limitations

The criterion "Alternative diagnosis is less likely than PE" is highly subjective and depends on the clinician's experience. Not validated in pregnant patients or children.
